Entertaining can mean something as simple as a choice of film or music for an evening at home; or it may encompass a whole banquet and any number of guests; a performance intended for thousands; or a theme, image, or structure that appears in many forms and is adapted to suit the tastes and needs of diverse groups. It is a form of amusement, and often of humor, although some entertainments have a more serious purpose — such as ceremonies, festivals, religious festivals, and satire. The word is derived from the Latin intertenere, which itself derives from the Indo-European root ten.
