Entertaiment is an idea with seemingly endless possibilities, both in its content and its capacity to transform itself across different mediums. The concept is derived from the Latin prefix inter and the suffix tenere, meaning “to hold inside.” Its consumption reflects this concept, ranging from the individual selecting a film, book, or video game for entertainment; to an entire family attending a concert or dinner theater; or a large-scale event that includes dance performances, comedy shows, or a play, with thousands of attendees. It is an activity understood objectively, communicates from external stimuli, offers pleasure and requires an audience’s passivity.
